Father and Sons

This is a bit out of sequence, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Over the Memorial Day weekend I took the boys to the annual Father/Sons campout. Like last year, we went to the Hill Country State Natural Area just outside Bandera, the "Cowboy Capital of the World."

We somehow survived a very uncomfortable night with it around ninety degrees at bedtime and us sleeping on the hard limestone ground after Joey popped our air mattress by jumping on it. Nevertheless, the boys had a great time. We threw a bunch of rocks, went on a hike, went scorpion hunting, and even watched the Hubble Telescope glide overhead. Here are some pictures.

The boys in front of the creek. They actually wanted to swim, but I vetoed that idea. Maybe next year...

The boys in a gully. They giggled like maniacs when I first taught them this word. I had to convince them that I was not making it up.
The boys from the top of our hike, overlooking the Hill Country.

Cool. I really liked the Hill Country. They should be careful next year if they go swimming of giant nutrias that could scare them to death. Did you guys fish at all? That's a classic piture of Charles giving a huge hug to Joey and he's just standing there looking cool. They're so funny.

Jon--you're so right. I always crack up at how pictures of the boys totally capture their personality. Charles with his goofy smile and grabbing his brother and Joey with his Joe Cool persona. Too funny.

Oh dear...that looks real...is Charles really hanging off a cliff? If so, did you just say, "hey, great photo moment and get the camera while he just hung there?" I don't think so...so clever!
I loved the father and sons camp out. The girls and I would promptly go to the store and buy almost every favorite kind of ice cream we could find and get a good girls' movie going while on my bed. Of course, there was always lots left when the boys came home.

Thanks for compliment on our 'cliff-hanger' picture. Once the boys grasped the concept, they were all over it. The only problem was that Charles had his usually large goofy grin the whole time and we had to do like 20 takes to get him to look even a little bit distressed.

And to your point, even though this is a set-up, I firmly believe blogging can be a threat to kids' health once their parents replace their "quick, rescue my child!" reaction with the "quick, grab the camera so we can blog it!" reaction to stuff that happens to their children.

Charles is simply a sweetheart all the way around! And he is so aware and just gets so many things that most kids are unaware of...well, an awfully lot of adults too, as far as that goes. ;)
Good point on the blog vs. rescue. And, I'm afraid I love a good photo moment sometimes.
You guys are so clever with the things you think of doing for pictures...remember, even people watching say, "Hey, good idea, let's shoot that too!" (Anonymous Mom)
