Into the Ocean

We just pulled in a few hours ago from a weekend at the beach--this time we went to Corpus Christi and North Padre and Mustang Islands. The kids love the beach and Liz and I love getting away as a family together. It was a great weekend, with beautiful weather, a great beach, and only about a 2 hour drive from our front door. The boys had another fun day playing in the surf and Tori actually got to get out of her stroller this time and crawl around, eat sand, etc. Tori also said her first word over the weekend by saying "more" to ask for food. She's such a fan of non-baby food that once she realized "more" worked much better than screaming or squealing or grunting to get food from the table, she said it over and over and over again.

Here are some pics and videos of our weekend.

Happiest baby in the world smiling in her stroller (wait, is that Lexie?)

Joey in a very fun cockpit. There was zero chance he was getting out of this under his own power--I had to practically pry him out.

On the way up the ramp to the USS Lexington.

Joey and Charles manning the anti-aircraft guns.

Joey in front of a "pirate ship" (actually, this is a replication of Christopher Columbus' 'Nina,' but any tall ship is a pirate ship to the boys).

All three Kewish kids in an old-school Navy Seals stealth submarine.

Topside on the USS Lexington, in front of the super structure, an A-7, and a Blue Angel (the A-4 version).

Tori, happy as always, on the deck of the USS Lexington.

The boys in the brig. I wish we had one of these in our hotel room. Also do you think I would get in trouble if I put one of these in my house? It seems like it would be so much more effective than a time-out corner.

One of the couple-dozen kingfish that we were catching in the surf. No big guys wanted the bait that day, although I saw a few swim a few feet away from me to check out my legs. I also saw a sting ray glide by about 6 inches from me and stepped directly on top of a flounder (right after I saw the sting ray, which about gave me a heart attack).

Charles basking in the South Texas sun.

Joey doing reverse planks to work on his abs.

I love this picture--Tori's crazy hair from the constant onshore breeze and a shot of her three teeth.

In this video Tori learns some things about the beach, like how it hurts when you splash salt water into your eyes, and how sand doesn't really taste that good.

In this video you can see how excited Joey is about the fish I was catching in the surf. First he gets chomped on the thumb (and the fish had a lot of sharp little teeth) and then keeps trying to pick it up as it swims away. We didn't get it on video, but shortly hereafter, Joey got spiked by a spine and got a big red welt. He didn't want to hold them after that.

This is how Tori usually moves around at home; we call it the 'elephant seal.' I always wondered how it would look if she did this down an actual beach. Well, now I know. I love how excited she is to get to the water and her little squeals.

Dude what are you doing with my baby? Ha ha ha, j/k. But seriously, those are some great pictures and clips. It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Lexie's been saying Mama for a while (which makes you feel like crap as a Dad) but just recently she started saying Dada (in the same way we'd say yeah at the end of Erie Canal) whenever she sees me. We'll have to post it for you guys, it's pretty funny. Look forward to seeing you guys if you come out to visit (if we're still living here).

Happy Birthday Again! I hope we got your message machine because Liz took you out on a hot date. I loved the pictures and videos of your getaway. I thought that Joey couldn't get any more fearless (like when he would constantly try to pet Rosie and grab her head) but he showed that he can by not only sticking his finger IN the fishes mouth but chasing it before it got away. hahah classic. Tori sure is cute too. She does look a lot like Lexie. Of course I've only seen pictures so I can't compare too much. Are those hints James that you guys are moving or what? Farther West hopefully.

Joe, I didn't know it was your birthday! Congrats on turning 40-ish. :o)

You have a great family, and I loved the pics and videos. I loved living near the beach in CT, but the best I have now is some omnipresent mountains that make me short of breath to climb. Oh well.

Next time you're in UT for a reunion, don't forget to reunion with us too!

I love this post! very cool pics and commentary! So.....Im curious, are you taking the video's with your digital camera or do you use a video camera to take these? I wish I would have been as good as you are doing on capturing those great moments with pictures and video but I was always too busy having fun with the kids to do it. Somehow you can do both....nice job and Happy Birthday!

Thanks Dave and Rob for the b-day wishes, and all I have to say is that, in the immortal words of Aaliyah, "age ain't nuttin' but a numbah."

Darren, last Christmas we got a hard drive video camera--meaning that it records directly to the internal hard drive. You sacrifice a bit in video quality, but it sure makes it easy to shoot little snippets here and there, and then when you plug it into your computer--voila!--they're all there as mpegs.

I LOVE it when Tori does the worm. She will grow up to be a b-girl on SYTYCD, and I'll vote for her a million times.

Holly, speaking of SYTYCD. I am so upset at who got off last week. my two favorites who happened to be a B girl and a B boy. They didn't have any techinical training and they still did the other styles of dance amazingly well, and just as well as the others. They are also way more humble then most of the other dancers.
