Sunflower

After losing most of our garden to a few hard storms that knocked down the corn and battered the snap peas, we have one beautiful and strong sunflower.

This is probably the tallest sunflower I have ever seen. It is getting so big that it is having a hard time staying all the way upright. What amazes me is how during the day it turns to face the sun and follows it all day long. It almost looks as though it is straining to keep its neck upright. Then at night it is droopy as if it is resting until the sun shines again. I will be sad when this sunflower has finished its cycle, but I think the boys will be excited to gather the seeds and feed them to the birds. We will have to save some seeds to plant next year.

Ah - our lone sunflower. I'm so proud of it, given the carnage in the garden all around it. We need to relocate our garden space for our next planting (and soon!).

The word in Spanish for sunflower is "girasol," which literally means "sun-turner." I learned that phenomenon when I was living in Cordoba, Spain, amongst fields and fields of girasoles. We'd leave in the morning and they'd all be looking over there -----> and when we'd come back at night, they'd all be looking over there <------.

What a great sunflower. I love sunflowers. They grew wild, of course, on our ranch when I was little. But not big and pretty like this one. Well, the boys can be proud of growing this, at least. (...and their Mom & Dad. I'll bet Tori just stares at it!)

We used to grow sunflowers just like that when I was a kid!!! I am sure the boys are enjoying watching it move...

That's cool, I never realized that they follow the sun. I guess it would go along with the name huh? So you should actually feed the seeds to yourselves instead of the birds. Well, I guess you can share with them but you should totally roast them. I love sunflower seeds. All summer long I eat them. Too bad about the rest of your garden :(

So beautiful! don't forget the radishes you already harvested!

Right, we can't forget the radishes. And we actually had two full pods of the snap peas that we ate one Saturday and a full row of carrots that we're about to dig up, so not a total lost cause. Still, I was so looking forward to the corn...
