This past holiday weekend we went down to South Padre Island. Being from California, our expectations were admittedly low but South Padre exceeded them nonetheless. It's a pretty easy drive down the coast from San Antonio, and we lucked out Pricelining a great hotel with private beach access and free breakfast. Except for a little rain Saturday morning (we were in the waves, so it didn't bother us much), we had excellent weather. The water was warm, waves were fun, sand was great, food was delicious, and we enjoyed some side trips in the area on Sunday.
We went to Church on Sunday morning at the small branch in Port Isabel. It reminded me of Spain since they met in a small space in a shopping center. The meetings were conducted in Spanish and the boys got to wear headphones for the shaky translation from one of the missionaries. Joey took it off immediately, but Charles stuck with it for a while, intrigued at the idea. He kept listening and staring at the speaker, taking them off for a second, putting them back on, looking back at the missionary translating--you could see the gears turning in his head. Here is a picture of the marquee outside the branch. Can you find the Church?
Then we took a little trip down to Brownsville to visit one of my projects next to the University. Of course, we had to stop by the Vermillion restaurant so I could have Liz try the ceviche. Ceviche is one of my very favorite things in the whole world, and the Vermillion serves the best that I've had outside of Spain. Liz agreed that it's the best. Also, beside the ceviche and seeing the project, the trip down there was made worthwhile when we saw two roseate spoonbills, which are very rare to see in the wild in the U.S.
After Brownsville, we decided on a lark to drive up to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Reserve, which has a staggering number of rare and endangered species. It's the only place in the US where Ocelots and Jaguarundis exist, and the last place that Leopards were found in the U.S. (yes, leopards were once indigenous to South Texas. I know, I was surprised too). On our little visit, we saw ospreys, a sandhill crane, a wood stork, a Texas tortoise that I almost took home, crested caracaras, green jays, golden-fronted woodpeckers, roadrunners, a green kingfisher, dozens of other birds we couldn't identify, and alligators. Yes, that's right, there are alligators there, and we actually ran into two of them, as you can see in this video:
And here's a picture of the boys with the gator in the background:
The rest of the time on Saturday and Monday we spent relaxing on the beach, eating a lot of good seafood, and walking the huge fishing pier in Port Isabel where we saw a guy catch a 26 pound red drum.
Blackbeards (or the Pirate restaurant, as the boys called it) has probably the best calamari (another one of my favorites) I've had outside of Chipiona, with Pirates Landing's (or the Pirate Castle restaurant, as the boys called it) calamari coming a close second. We had fresh Gulf shrimp with every meal--so much so that on Monday Joey asked "where are we going to go eat shrimp?" instead of "where are we going to eat lunch?" I think the boys had shrimp every day for lunch and dinner.
The kids had a blast and we practically had to tear the boys away from the beach on Monday. Tori squealed with delight all weekend long and slept through the night in the hotel. We were sad to leave. In fact, since we've been back, Joey keeps asking, "when are we going back to the hotel?" Soon, I hope.
Now, tons of pictures:
Here's a bizarre entryway for one of the many beach shops
And a picture of my three favorite girls (the third being our car, Jenny B, in the background)
Here is the gang at Pirate's Landing in Port Isabel:
And Charles helping steer the ship:
Of course, we did the obligatory 'bury the kids in the sand.'
Then I made a sea turtle for them to ride.
I tried to get Joey to sit on the sand and let the waves hit him. He wanted no part of it.
Instead, he just danced around on the sand.
Charles was much braver in the surf:
I love the anticipation on his face in this picture
He even caught a few waves himself and was fully stoked--then he got planted face first in the sand. By the way, is it wrong that I was laughing for like 15 minutes after Charles got bent? We've all been through this before, right? Right?? Here is the video:
And here's my gorgeous little baby girl. I really just can't get enough of her--as evidenced by the dozens and dozens of pictures we have of her. Every time she sees me, she smiles as big as she can, wiggles her arms and legs, and squeals and squeals.
Cool pic of Tori with cho-cho in the background:
Another fun thing this weekend--Tori popped her first little tooth:
And of course, my favorite picture of all (at least half of it).

Okay, now I don't feel quite as bad laughing at the video since you said you were laughing too. You're totally right, we've all been there before. Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. We look forward to the beach too but I don't think our water will be as warm as the Gulf unfortunately. I love that Tori laughs whenever she sees you. Lexie does the same thing for me, I love when I get that reaction.
Great pictures, and now I have a better idea of what you described to me on the phone...of course I am quite disappointed that you actually laughed at your son (my grandson) when he was knocked over by the wave. You were certainly no master body surfer when you were his age. And, as you will no doubt recall, I would NEVER have even THOUGHT of laughing at you (or any of your siblings) when you munched it as little kids....
Anyway, sounds like you had a great trip and made good memories.
Love,
Dad
HA! I remember about a million times as a kid getting scared to death by you and you just laughing and laughing and laughing. Not the same as munching it (and we need to bring that phrase back, by the way), but you were definitely having fun at my expense! ;)
Plus, I knew he was ok and was mostly delighted at his first educational experience with waves and thought it was funny that all you saw was legs for a little while. Plus when he stands up he is holding a piece of seaweed. Where did he get it? How did he have the concentration to grab it as he was doing a face grind on the sand?
He was back in the waves literally a minute later and was even braver the rest of the day, so I don't think there are any residual fears of the ocean. This is not the case with lizards now, since I caught an anole yesterday in our backyard to show that boys and it promptly bit me on the finger. Charles ran screaming every time I suggested he hold it.
I love the pictures, you guys are so cool! Charles I am so sorry that the wave had such bad manners and knocked you over when you were not ready! I do not like it when that happens to me either!
Wow.......that was a wild faceplant in the sand....ouch!:0 Charles is now in the whipeout brotherhood! That was a 10 big time :P I hope that does not ruin him and turn him into an ocean hater! Did he get out there again after that wave smacked him around? I hope so.
Now you just need to get him on a board and its official! Surfer Charles:)
Just saw your post that he got back out there.....good for him
Wow! That was an amazing acrobatic-like faceplant! How did he do that?! Ash and I couldn't help but laugh because we of course have all been there before. Ashley recently when we went on our honeymoon and I tried to teach her to surf. I think we have a family album of me running out of the ocean crying hhahahaha. The trip looked great! A lot of cool animals for sure, especially the roseate spoonbills. It looks like someone spraypainted them, that's interesting that its from their diet. When I would go to the zoo in Brazil for P-day (like every p-day) I remember seeing the crested caracaras. Looks like a fun memorial day all around.
Wow! What an eventful day: alligators; big, big smiles; sand sea turtles; a new tooth; and especially the wipeout.
I am still laughing at Joey's "NO" with the aware emphasis he put on it when you asked him if he wanted to do it. Maybe this is one thing he doesn't have to find out for himself (to believe in it's potential danger).
What a brave boy our Charles is for going out again.
Yes...the term "munched it" is a good one all you kids are familiar with. :)
And, I might add, it seems dads and guys can laugh easier at these things than moms can...but I suppose that is good, because there wouldn't be near the life experiences without the guy-adventurous thing. And, yet, there is that protection angle that you guys have going too...hard for my brain to wrap around how it all works. :)
LOVE IT! We took a trip there when we lived in TX and it was much better than we anticipated. The kids looked like they had a blast--What fun!
I forgot to say that your current song you guys are listening to is one of my favorite Weezer songs. Even better than the mexican wedding video is the one with the band members and all of the animals. Its hilarious, especially when they start tossing the chimp in the air. It looks like the CA hills too in the fall.
I love that song too Jon--and did you get the connection? Island in the sun? As in, South Padre? Cool eh?
Just catching up on everyone's blogs after being out of town, and man that video is FUN-NY!! It sometimes makes you feel (a little) guilty to laugh at your kids, but you just can't help it sometimes!! Looks like you guys had a fun time!
By the way, Tori and Gwen must be on the same schedule, Gwen's came through over Memorial Day weekend too!
Looks like you guys had a great vacation! Next time you may want to at least give Charles a bogey board or teach him not to attack the wave sitting down. We will likely be in Davis County on the actual 4th, but should be around otherwise. How long are you here for? Give us a call.
