FD&C Blue #1

Today when I picked Charles up from school he had blue fingers and lips, a blue mouth and blue on his cheeks. I thought that he had some how managed to get a blue marker all over his face and hands. So I asked him what he had all over his face and he said, "I don't know, but we got to have a Spider Man cupcake for Nabeel's Birthday today." I guess he wouldn't really know he had blue all over his face since he probably hadn't looked in the mirror all day. Our kids rarely eat sweets anyway, but when they do, it's usually homemade. I can't believe how much dye is in the frosting of those cupcakes. I couldn't even wash it off of his skin.

Schools don't allow homemade foods to be brought for birthdays anymore. I would say sad, until you see some of the students kitchens, and then I would say good idea. There could be some guide lines though and red and blue dye should be off the list. It's not really yummy anyway. Just looks pretty and makes a huge mess. Everyone has to have one at some point in their childhood even if they are a bad choice.

That is one (and probably only) advantage of being in NY they are fierce about nutrition and the environment. The PTA has a bake sale 2x's a month and it is all homemade and they encourage whole grains, organic, and "healthy" snacks. That said, they all get the grocery store cupcakes or treats at times and love it. He looks like the time Carson took marker to his face...I hope you can get it all off.

the food dye is a life-force of it's own. when inez had her first b-day we had a cake that had these balloons on it of pure frosting and she got into the blue one. she then had blue diapers for a few days. nasty!

Liz! I'll bet you didn't know that I check your blog almost every day! I found a link in Cori Lewis' blog that links to your blog. Isn't that crazy?! I love to keep unpdated on your life and your kids. I feel like I'm in touch with everyone because I read their blogs but then they don't hear from me. Maybe I'll start blogging. We'll see!

Nothing like food dye. It's a necessity in lots of the thingskids like, it seems. Well, maybe it matched his eyes at least....????
