Strawberry Cutthroats

On one of the last days of our trip Jon, my dad and I went up to Strawberry Reservoir to fish for the notorious Bear Lake cutthroats that inhabit the lake.

This is one of the best trout fisheries anywhere--so good that even a few novices like us got into some great fish. It was our first time at Strawberry and the first time any of us caught cutthroats. We caught 11 total by just fishing in the morning. All were caught jigging off the bottom, since that's where the fish go during the hottest part of the summer.

Since Fish and Wildlife stocked the cutts in the lake to control the chub population, you are only allowed to keep fish under 15 and over 22 inches. We had one or two that were near the upper end of that range, but nothing over the "slot." We did catch three that were just under 15" and pretty fat, so we took them home to eat. Here are some pictures:

Another one right in the middle of the slot (about 18")

Dad's big cutt still in the net (look how glassy the lake is!).

Jon still not sure how to hold his fish up for a picture.

I know Dave! We really wanted to hook up with you guys and the Stangers but before we even realized it we were on our way back home. Maybe we'll meet up sometime once you get to NYC.
